As members of the European Parliament have started their work on the review of the Transparency Register, ALTER-EU has sent detailed recommendations from our June 2013 report “Rescue the Register! How to make EU lobby transparency credible and reliable“, including on the question which data lobbyists should provide.

The European Union is reviewing its Transparency Register, and considering how best to secure lobbying transparency at EU level. All the signs emerging from the Commission are that they would prefer to retain their voluntary and 'light touch' approach to lobbying regulation. This reports proofs why this is unsustainable.

A few days before the second birth day of the European Commission and European Parliament's joint lobby register, our new report shows that the voluntary register is still failing to get a sufficient share of lobbyists to register. Moreover, the register remains packed with unreliable and incomplete data.

Over the next months, the European Commission and Parliament will review their voluntary joint Transparency Register that entered into force June 2011. The register continues to have a large number of shortcomings, due to its voluntary nature. According to Professor Markus Krajewski the new EU Treaties provide a legal base for a mandatory lobby register.
