Our website got a face lift (see the result here), we had several letter actions (see the ALTER-EU news below) and together with the Civil Society Contact Group we published the new 'Transparency Register' guidelines, with which organisations can make a truly transparent registration in the European Parliament and European Commission's register.

MEPs call for curbs on the revolving door

In recent months, the Parliament has been busy reviewing the Commission's proposal to reform the rules that govern EU officials' terms and conditions. There is a fairly widely-held view amongst the institutions that EU staff must not be excluded from the wider austerity measures which are simultaneously being implemented within member states.

Les stock-options de Jean-Luc Dehaene valent à ce jour environ 3 millions d’euros. Le député aurait-il dû les mentionner dans sa déclaration d’intérêts financiers, tel que l’impose le nouveau code de conduite des membres du Parlement UE ?

Dans sa déclaration d’intérêts financiers, à laquelle tous les eurodéputés sont soumis, Jean-Luc Dehaene ne fait pas mention de ses bonus AB InBev (3 millions d’euros). Il aurait dû le faire.

4 ALTER-EU groups send letter to European Parliament President Martin Schulz about MEP Jean-Luc Dehaene's undeclared stock options

Several Belgian media reported that MEP Dehaene is allowed to exert stock options granted by AB InBev, potentially amounting to around 3 million Euro. We are surprised to notice that those stock options are nowhere reported in Mr Dehaene’s current declaration of interest, despite the very clear obligations regarding declaration of outside interests.

Letter to European Parliament's Legal Affairs committee ahead of 'Staff Regulations' vote

The Staff Regulations contain the ethics rules which govern 55,000 or more officials who work across the EU institutions. ALTER-EU considers that the current process to reform the Staff Regulations provides an opportunity to improve these ethics rules, especially those that relate to conflicts of interest during and after EU staff work for the EU.

Over-reliance on public pressure to clear conflicts of interest

In March 2011, four MEPs were accused of accepting to table amendments for ‘clients’ after having been told by undercover reporters from The Sunday Times that such work would be compensated with money. Nine months later, Parliament took a step toward cleaning the dust in its house.
