Parliament president Jerzy Buzek has said that a proposed code of conduct for MEPs will do much to boost public confidence in the institution.

The cross-party group was set up after three MEPs were caught by an undercover newspaper reporter accepting money to table amendments to draft EU legislation.

Buzek described the group's conclusions as "a significant improvement to the status quo", saying they were aimed at clarifying "how elected MEPs should fulfil their obligations".

Alter-EU spokesman Paul de Clerck said the new code "is an important step forward, although more work will be needed in the future to tighten the rules further".
